this is the story of moving to chicago…

… by yourself for the first time.

So far, have two interviews – Starbucks and a bookstore. Starbucks is pretty much a sure thing, unless Becky somehow screwed me by saying I am ineligible for rehire (ha). The bookstore in Oak Park was strange. I thought the interview went well. I can’t take the job even if they offer it to me because they only pay $8/hr and it’s only 3 days/wk, but i was really charmed by the store – a discount bookstore, run by a husband and wife team. However, I was turned off in the worst way by this horrid quiz they made me take – match the books to the authors, ugh. I hate quizzes and tests and never have tested well, even in subjects I’m familiar with. Although I worked in the English department and am aware of a lot of literature and many authors, I only knew 3 of 25 that they put on the quiz, ugh – Hemingway, The Sun Also Rises, Delillo, White Noise and Zinn, People’s History of the United States. So, instead, I wrote them a short story. I honestly think quizzes like that are shitty, and the contents of my messenger bag would have been much better indication of whether I a qualified to work there (the Chicago Reader, Fitzgerald’s Tender is the Night, and a copy of one of my stories. Oh yeah and the Free Press). Who knows, maybe they’ll like my unconventional approach. It doesn’t matter, though, it’s too far away and doesn’t pay enough. Sigh. I have to go to an interview for a secretary job now…

to be continued…
